How to capture a frame
Choose a video, drag the slider to the moment you want, then press Capture this frame. The frame is drawn on a canvas inside your browser and appears below — tap Download JPG to save it.
Good to know
The picture keeps the same width and height as your video, so a 1080p clip gives you a 1920×1080 still. Frames with less motion look sharper, and a simple, bright frame makes a better cover image than a busy one. Nothing is processed on a server, so large files stay private and the tool keeps working offline.

What this thumbnail maker does
It builds a ready-to-upload cover image for your video on a wide horizontal canvas. YouTube thumbnails are 16:9, so you add a picture and a short title, check how it looks small, then export a JPG or PNG to upload as your custom thumbnail.
Thumbnail size you should use
- Recommended: 1280 x 720 pixels (16:9).
- Minimum width: 640 pixels — narrower images are rejected by YouTube.
- File: JPG or PNG, under 2 MB.
- Bottom-right corner: keep it clear of text — the video duration badge sits there.
How to use it
- Add the base picture — a frame from your video or another photo.
- Add your title in three to five words and make it large.
- Check the small preview. If the title is hard to read at phone size, it will be hard to read in the feed.
- Export, then upload it in YouTube Studio: your video, Thumbnail, Upload thumbnail.
Example
A cooking video with a plain frame gets few clicks. Using the same frame, place a big "10-Minute Karahi" on the left half and the plate shot on the right, keeping the text away from the bottom-right corner. The image stays readable even when YouTube shrinks it into a phone feed.
What actually improves click-through
- One idea per thumbnail — two headlines compete with each other.
- Strong contrast between text and background, with a soft dark shade behind light text.
- Faces and clear objects beat busy collages.
- Never copy someone else's thumbnail or use a misleading image.
Limitations
- The tool prepares the image only. Uploading is done in YouTube Studio, and your channel must be verified for custom thumbnails.
- Text placed on a low-resolution frame stays soft — start from the largest frame you have.
- Very heavy PNG exports can pass 2 MB. Export as JPG if that happens.
Frequently asked questions
Can I use a portrait photo?
You can, but the 16:9 crop cuts the top and bottom. Crop or zoom first.
The upload says the file is too big — now what?
Export as JPG instead of PNG and keep the size under 2 MB.
Does it work for Facebook or TikTok covers?
The canvas is YouTube's 16:9 size. For vertical platforms, design at that platform's own ratio instead.
