How to use this converter

Pakistan has two widely quoted dollar rates: the interbank rate, used by banks and official remittance channels, and the open market rate, quoted by money changers. They differ slightly and both move every day, so this converter asks you to type the rate rather than showing one that may be out of date.

Typical uses include checking how much a monthly remittance is worth, working out the cost of an online purchase billed in dollars, estimating freelance income in Rupees, or converting a visa or tuition fee.

If you are sending money through a bank, the final amount depends on the rate at the moment your transfer is processed, plus any service charges. Treat the figure here as a close estimate rather than a final amount.

Bank rate, open market and interbank

Three rates exist in Pakistan. The interbank rate is what banks use among themselves and is the figure reported in the news. The rate you get at a bank includes a small margin on top, and the open market rate at exchange companies can differ again. This converter shows a market reference rate: for a transfer or exchange, always confirm the final rate with your bank or exchange company.

Why the rupee moves

The rupee's value depends on how much foreign currency comes in through exports, remittances and investment compared with how much goes out for imports and repayments. Strong inflows help the rupee, higher demand for dollars weakens it. That is why the rate changes during the day, and why an old rate should never be reused.

Sending or receiving money

For remittances, look at the exchange rate and the transfer fee together, because a slightly better rate with a high fee can end up costing more. On small amounts the difference is a few hundred rupees; on large amounts it can be thousands, so compare two or three providers before sending.
