Gold, tola and Zakat

In Pakistan gold is usually bought and sold by tola, while rates are often quoted per gram. One tola equals 11.6638 grams, so a 5 tola set weighs about 58.32 grams. If your jeweller quotes a tola rate, divide it by 11.6638 to get the per-gram figure this calculator needs.

Zakat on gold is due at 2.5% of its value once your total wealth is above the nisab and has been held for a full lunar year. The nisab for gold is commonly given as 7.5 tola, or 52.5 tola if measured against silver. Many scholars suggest using the silver nisab as it is the lower threshold.

How gold rates work in Pakistan

Rates here are quoted per tola (11.66 grams), and jewellers quote a rate for a specific karat. When you value your gold for Zakat, use the rate for the karat you own and ignore making charges — you are valuing the metal, not the design. World prices are quoted per ounce (31.1 grams) in US dollars, which is why the local rate moves with both the gold price and the dollar rate.

Karat and purity guide

24K = 99.9% pure, used for bars and coins.
22K = 91.7%, common in Pakistan for bangles and chains.
21K = 87.5%, widely used for bridal sets.
18K = 75%, mostly in stone-set and imported jewellery.

Zakat on silver and gold together

Silver Nisab (612.36 grams) is much lower in value than gold Nisab, so if you own both, check your total against the silver Nisab. Many scholars prefer this for mixed holdings because it includes more people.
