Calculate Zakat on Cash, Gold and Savings
Enter your total zakatable assets and any short-term debts to work out the Zakat due at 2.5%.
This is an estimate. Zakat becomes due once your net wealth stays above the nisab for one full lunar year.
How Zakat is calculated
Zakat is due at 2.5% of the wealth you have held for a full lunar year, once that wealth is above the nisab threshold. In practice most people add up cash in hand, bank balances, savings, gold and silver, then subtract any debts that are due immediately.
The commonly used nisab reference points are 7.5 tola of gold (about 87.48 grams) or 52.5 tola of silver (about 612.36 grams). Many scholars recommend using the silver nisab because it is the lower of the two, which allows more people to fulfil the obligation.
This calculator gives you the 2.5% figure for the net amount you enter. It does not decide whether Zakat is due on your assets, and it does not cover the detailed rules for business stock, property held for resale, or agricultural produce. For those questions, please consult a qualified scholar.
Which assets are included in Zakat?
Zakat is due on the wealth you own, not on the income you earn. Cash in hand, savings and current accounts, foreign currency, gold and silver in any form, business stock, shares and mutual funds, money lent to others that you expect back, and property bought to resell are all added first, and then 2.5 percent is applied. Personal things such as your house, car, furniture and clothes you use are not counted.
Common mistakes people make
- Forgetting bank accounts that are not used every day.
- Counting gold at the purchase price instead of today's market value.
- Ignoring the lunar-year condition: wealth has to stay above Nisab for a full year.
- Valuing business stock at cost instead of its sale value.
When should Zakat be paid?
You can pay it any time after your Zakat year completes, and many people choose Ramadan. There is no fixed date or rate table needed — what matters is the value of your wealth on the day your year completes.
